Erice is located on the mount which rises above Trapani and is easily accessible by cable car. Lovely the view at sunset!
It has an amazing view towards the Egadi Islands, the Stagnone, the salt pans and the cultivated fields in the province of Trapani. The medieval village is also called Monte San Giuliano, dedicated to the Goddess of beauty and love. Often a thick fog creates a magical atmosphere, as if it was suspended in time. Erice is rich of historic churches and fortifications, such as the Mother Church. One of the best views in the entire area! It’s a place where time seems to have stopped, because in addition to being a place of many erudite scientists who created the Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture of Ettore Majorana, it is full of stone treasures as the numerous historic Churches or as the “doors” that preserve the village and allow access to the village (Porta Carmine, Porta Trapani, Porta Spada).
The narrow streets are filled with craft shops; hand painted ceramics and bright coloured carpets.
I’ll tell you a secret! At the entrance of Balio’s gardens you will find the “Bench of Lovers”, where just whispering a couple of words at one site of the bench, the other one sitting at the opposite site, can hear you.
Let yourself be guided by the smell of the famous delicacies confectionery prepared by the nuns’ Labs. You should absolutely taste the Genovese (particularly soft and custard-filled pastry). We suggest going to the Antica Pasticceria del Convento, via Guarnotti, one of the most famous Maria Grammatico’s Sicilian pastries, where you can taste the typical sweets of almond paste stuffed with candied Citron. A real triumph of the palate!
